| NOTABLE | Running backs coach whose tutelage helped the Bulldogs lead the Southeastern Conference in rushing in 2000, averaging 193.8 yards per game...State also ranked third in the SEC in 1998 (172.0 ypg)...Mentored Dicenzo Miller to MSU's sixth-ever, 1,000-yard season in 2000 (1,005 yards) and James Johnson to the fourth and fifth-ever, 1,000-yard campaigns in 1997 (1,069 yards) and 1998 (1,383 yards)...Three-year letterman as a defensive end and linebacker during his playing days at Delta State University. |
When Mississippi State blew away the Southeastern Conference in rushing offense in 2000, the credit rightly fell on the work of running backs coach Glenn Davis.
Not only did the Bulldogs lead the league in rushing offense, they won the team title by almost 30 yards per game. State's 193.8 yards per game rushing went a long way toward the Bulldogs finishing third in the loop in total offense.
Obviously, with team accomplishments come individual awards. In 2000, Davis helped Dicenzo Miller become just the fifth Bulldog back to reach 1,000 yards rushing in a single season, and Dontae Walker reached the school's all-time top 10 in rushing. During the 2000 season, both Miller and Walker surpassed the 100-yard mark six times, with Miller's total coming in a school-record six consecutive weeks.
Davis begins the seventh season of his second term at MSU, having joined Jackie Sherrill's coaching staff in the spring of 1997 after two seasons at Copiah-Lincoln (Miss.) Community College.
Previously, Davis had been a two-year member of MSU's staff in the 1980s and is an alumnus of State's graduate school.
The 2000 achievements should not have come as a surprise. During Davis' first two campaigns with the Bulldogs, State also produced one of the SEC's top rushing attacks. Former State great James Johnson led those efforts by becoming the first Bulldog ever to record two 1,000-yard seasons and finishing as the school's fourth all-time leading rusher. Johnson was a second-round selection by the Miami Dolphins in the ?”99 National Football League draft.
Davis has 17 years of experience working in the state of Mississippi. He served on then-head coach Rockey Felker's MSU staff as a graduate assistant from 1986-87. He also has five years experience in the Mississippi junior college ranks and an additional four years working on the Magnolia State's high school level.
During his two years at Copiah Lincoln (Miss.) Community College, he helped lead the team to a 15-5 overall record and six of his offensive players earned Division I scholarships. In three years at Holmes (Miss.) Community College, he helped the team improve from a 2-8 record to 6-4 overall.
Davis served on Bobby Wallace's original staff at North Alabama from 1988-91, helping the Lions to an NCAA Division II playoff appearance in 1990 and laying the foundation for three straight UNA national championships (1993-95).
