Maholm Named To ABCA All-South Region Team
Maholm, the eighth player selected overall and the first SEC athlete chosen in last week's Major League draft, compiled a 9-2 record with a 2.76 earned run average. He registered a career-high 101 strikeouts in 107.2 innings.
Tulane's Michael Aubrey was the lone unanimous selection on the 2003 team, garnering every vote at first base. The 6-2 junior hit .420 on the season with 18 home runs, 79 runs batted in and 19 stolen bases.
Justin Christian of Southeast Missouri was voted as the second baseman after a senior year in which he batted .376 with 13 homers and 48 runs driven in.
LSU's Aaron Hill, the 2003 Southeastern Conference Coaches Player of the Year, was recognized at shortstop. Hill, whose Tigers play in the College World Series this week in Omaha, Neb., was batting .368 with eight home runs and 62 RBI at the time of his nomination.
Brian Buscher of South Carolina is the third baseman on this year's team. Buscher was hitting .384 with 12 round-trippers and 58 driven in at the time of his nomination.
The catcher is Brian Rose of Florida. The senior pounded out 16 home runs in 2003 and drove in 59 runs to go along with a .357 average.
Georgia's David Coffey was named to the team as the designated hitter with a .355 batting average, nine homers and 40 RBI.
A pair of Southern Miss Golden Eagles, Clint King and Jeff Cook, and Eastern Kentucky's Josh Anderson comprise the all-region outfield. King hit .397 with 22 home runs and 71 RBI while Cook touted a .378 average to go along with 21 bombs and 70 RBI. Anderson hit .447 with 106 hits, 53 runs scored and 57 stolen bases.
Completing the ABCA All-South Region first team is Auburn relief pitcher Steven Register, who totaled 16 saves in 2003.
