Rain Postpones SEC Tourney Play; Maholm Now Set To Start In Opener
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Heavy rain in the Birmingham area forced postponement of Wednesday's opening round competition at the SEC Baseball Tournament. It has also changed the pitching plans for 14th-ranked Mississippi State.
MSU (38-16-1), which had designated sophomore righty Alan Johnson (5-3, 4.08) of nearby Pleasant Grove, Ala., will now send junior ace Paul Maholm (8-2, 2.53) to the hill in Thursday's 5 p.m. matchup with Mississippi. Maholm has been MSU's lead pitcher during SEC weekend competition this year.
MSU and Mississippi are bracketed with LSU and Arkansas in the double-elimination tournament at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. The bracket winners meet Friday at 8 p.m. while the losers square off in a 1 p.m. elimination game.
