Maholm, Maniscalco, Gendron Earn All-SEC Honors
Junior left-handed pitcher Paul Maholm of Holly Springs, Miss., was named to the 12-player All-SEC first team. Senior shortstop Matthew Maniscalco of Oxford, Ala., and junior third baseman Steve Gendron of Tampa, Fla., earned second-team honors.
The all-conference team, selected by the head coaches of the league's 12 teams, was announced Monday by the Southeastern Conference.
Maholm, a second-team All-SEC selection as a sophomore, has compiled an 8-2 record with a 2.53 earned run average. The MSU ace has ranked among the SEC's leaders in earned run average for much of the season and paces the MSU pitching staff in wins, innings pitched (92.2) and strikeouts (92). He enters this week's SEC Tournament ranked sixth in career strikeouts (264), seventh in career wins (26) and eighth in career innings pitched (297.0).
Maniscalco, a four-year starter at shortstop at Mississippi State, is enjoying a career-best senior season. A starter in a school-record 238 consecutive games, Maniscalco takes a career-high .346 batting average into Wednesday's SEC Tournament opener against Mississippi. He paces the team with 83 hits, 49 runs scored and 18 stolen bases while ranking second on the team with 14 doubles, seven home runs and 37 RBI.
Gendron, one of three Bulldogs to start all 55 games this season, has also ranked among MSU's offensive leaders throughout the season. Currently hitting at a .330 clip, Gendron stands second on the club with 76 hits and 13 stolen bases and sports the second-highest fielding percentage among SEC third basemen (.941).
The three all-SEC selections represents the most for Mississippi State since 1999.
LSU shortstop Aaron Hill was tabbed SEC Player of the Year, South Carolina left-hander David Marchbanks named SEC Pitcher of the Year, Mississippi relief pitcher Stephen Head chosen SEC Freshman of the Year, and LSU head coach Ray "Smoke" Laval named SEC Coach of the Year.
