MSU Track Set For 2003 SEC Outdoor Championships
State's men come into the country's top conference championship ranked third in Trackwire.com power rankings. The Bulldogs look to rise to the top half of the counference for the first time since the SEC expanded to 12 teams.
State's men will be led by the sprint corps, who have five individuals and both realy teams ranked in Trackwire's Dandy Dozen.
Senior Pierre Browne tries to become MSU's first athlete in 14 years to win an SEC title both indoors and outdoors. The winner of the 55m dash indoors, Browne is a top contender in the 100 & 200 meters.
Junior Marquis Davis also is another top contender from State. The Memphis native ranks as the top collegiate in the 200-meter dash outdoors. He finished second in the NCAA Indoor Championships 200m.
State's women will be led by sophomore Tiffany McWilliams. The SEC's indoor mile champion, McWilliams will run in the 1500m and 800m. She could become the first female in MSU history to win an SEC title in both indoors and outdoors.
The Lady Bulldogs could get points from their other regional qualifiers. Sophomore Crystal Averitt holds the school record in both the hammer and discus throws. Meggan Hodge, an first-team, all-SEC cross country performer, runs in the 3000m steeplechase.
Action begins at Tom Black Track Thursday at 4:30 p.m. et with the combined events. Freshmen Trey Hardee and Lauren Johnson are entered in their second decathlon and heptathlon, respectively.
