Nelson, Ashley Both Qualify In 400M At Ole Miss Open
OXFORD, Miss. -- Juniors Keston Nelson and Jamel Ashley made their mark at the new Ole Miss Track & Field Complex Saturday, regionally qualifying in the 400-meter dash at the Ole Miss Open.
The nation's third-ranked Bulldogs had four winners in the last regular season meet, with Nelson's 46.48 time in the 400-meter dash the best of the lot. The Toronto native now is regionally qualified in the 200m and 400m.
Sophomore LaChristopher Lewis ranked second (46.54), and Ashley finished fourth (47.28). Both marks qualify the duo for the NCAA Mideast Regional.
State's men also had a win in the 1500-meter run by junior Jason Odom (3:59.86). Field event winners for the Bulldogs were Matthew Denton in the high jump (6-9 3/4) and Clay Garner in the javelin (198-11).
State's women took home three first-place finishes in running events. Junior Nicole Dunn won the 400-meter dash in 56.32. Sophomore Zita Magloire ranked first in the 800-meter run (2:11.03) to move into the fifth spot on MSU's all-time 800m list. Sophomore Jennifer McPherson also won the 1500-meter run (4:34.24).
State's team will have next week off before heading to Knoxville for the 2003 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, slated for May 15-18.
