Six MSU Netmen Named Academic All-SEC
To be eligible for the SEC honor roll, a student-athlete must (1) have a 3.0 grade point average for either the past year or for his career, (2) be a sophomore or higher in terms of academic classification, and (3) have 24 semester hours toward a degree.
Bulldogs named to this year's team were Matt Armstrong, Luiz Carvalho, Rene-Charles Combette, Max Fomine, Jerome Le Belicard and David Ruiz. Combette, Le Belicard and Ruiz were all repeat selections to the squad.
Ruiz, a senior last year, earned his fourth selection to the team with a 3.97 GPA in international business and finance. The Colmar, France, product was a Verizon third-team Academic all-American twice during his career.
Combette, a senior this season, was honored for the third-straight year. A native of Ajaccio, Corsica, he boasts a 3.68 grade point in international business. He was named a Scholar-Athlete by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association last year as well. Le Belicard was a second-time honoree, also making the team in 2001. He carries a 3.42 GPA in marketing.
First-time team members were Matt Armstrong, Luiz Carvalho and Max Fomine. Armstrong, from Jackson, is a 3.16 student in banking and finance. Carvalho, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, boasts a 3.41 grade point in communications. The Teraspol, Moldavia, product Fomine holds a 3.20 GPA in general business.
"We are once again well-represented on the Academic all-SEC team," MSU head coach Sylvain Guichard said. "It speaks well of these student-athletes that they are making the best of their college education. We are very proud of them for their accomplishments on and off the court."
With Wednesday's honors, MSU men's tennis has had at least one selection to the Academic all-SEC team in 15 of the last 16 seasons and at least four honorees on the squad in each of the last seven seasons.
