Men's 4x100M Relay Champions Of America At Penn Relays
PHILADELPHIA -- Mississippi State's 4x100m relay team won the school's first-ever Championship of America on the final day of competition at the 109th Penn Relays.
LaChristopher Lewis, Marquis Davis, Glenn McFadden and Pierre Browne ran the event in 39.20, beating the nation's top-ranked team from Texas. The team comprised of nine-time, all-Americans finished just 8/100 off the school record tied last year on the Franklin Field track. State ranked second in last year's championship.
The same team came back later and finished second in the 4x200m relay. MSU's team was the first American collegiate team across the line, behind the winners from U-Tech.
"This was our best Penn Relays ever by far," head coach Al Schmidt said. "We feel great about our performances this weekend. We were just one handoff away from winning the 4x200m. And we could not have asked for a better weekend out of LaChristopher Lewis."
Sophomore Tiffany McWilliams came in second in the women's Olympic development mile. The NCAA indoor mile runner-up clocked a time of 4:35.54, ranking behind former NCAA champion Carmen Douma of Canada.
MSU's 4x400m relay team of Kelvin Harris, Keston Nelson, Jamel Ashley and Lewis took home the Bulldogs' second trophy, winning the college 4x400m relay. The team ran their best time of the season (3:06.68) to win the second section.
State runs next Saturday, May 3 at the Ole Miss Open in Oxford, Miss.
