MSU Men's Track Post Five New Qualifiers At TCU Invite
Junior Marquis Davis led the pack, winning the 200m in 20.15, the second-fastest time in school history. Senior Pierre Browne finished third (20.59), with sophomore LaChristopher Lewis ranking sixth at 20.77. Junior Keston Nelson came in 10th with a mark of 21.07. The four, along with sophomore Glenn McFadden, are now entered in the NCAA Mideast Regional, set for the last weekend in May in Columbus, Ohio.
Davis also had a good showing in the 100m dash, finishing third in 10.11. Lewis just missed posting his fourth regional qualifying mark of the season, running a 10.52 and rating eighth in the meet.
"We came here to get our guys qualified in the 200," head coach Al Schmidt remarked, "and I think we more than accomplished that task."
"Marquis really solidified his spot as one of the best sprinters in the nation, along with Pierre."
MSU's women added one new regional qualifier to their mix when freshman Lauren Johnson won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.01. Johnson also won the long jump, leaping 18-10 3/4. The Scottsboro, Ala., native also is provisionally qualified for the NCAAs in the heptathlon.
State had one other winner on the women's side, with sophomore Tiffany McWilliams breaking her old school mark in winning the 800m. McWilliams also set a new meet record with her 2:05.34 time.
Sophomore Matthew Denton also cleared 6-11 1/2 to take second in the high jump and to improve his regional qualifying mark.
MSU travels next to the Penn Relays, set to begin on Thursday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
