State Men's Track Has Four In Texas Relays Finals, Add Four More Regional Qualifiers
AUSTIN, Texas -- Four male athletes and one female qualified for regionals during Day Three of the 76th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
But MSU's women's distance medley relay team stole the spotlight, breaking the school record by 28 seconds and also setting a new meet and Mike Myers Stadium record. Jennifer McPherson, Nicole Dunn, Zita Magloire and Tiffany McWilliams shattered their second school record of the year, after breaking the indoor DMR record by over 20 seconds. This is also their second meet and stadium record set during 2003, following their record run at the Rod McCravy Memorial at Kentucky in February.
State's male throwers led the team in finals on Friday, with two individuals adding three regional qualifying marks to the team. Sophomore J.D. Erickson threw new personal-bests in the shot put and discus, placing third in the discus with a toss of 174-2. He ranked ninth in the shot (54-4) to regionally qualify in that event as well.
Junior Clay Garner finished 12th in the javelin, throwing a regional qualifying mark of 200-5. Both Erickson and Garner will be making their first NCAA meet appearance at the Mideast Regional in Columbus, Ohio in May.
State's men had a great day on the track as well, advancing to four of Saturday's finals. Both the 4x100m (40.27) and 4x400m (3:09.32) relay teams advanced to finals on Saturday and regionally qualify. Those teams, plus the 4x200m relay team, run in finals held Saturday.
Two individuals also advanced to the finals of their event. Junior Marquis Davis ranked first in the 100-meter dash preliminaries, clocking a 10.19 time. Senior Kelvin Harris improved his 110m hurdles time to 14.05, qualifying fifth for Saturday's finals.
Sophomore Meggan Hodge added a fifth regional qualifier for MSU's women. The Beaumont, Alberta native broke her old school record in the 3000m steeplechase with her time of 10:56.02, placing second in the event.
The 76th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays conclude on Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium. State begins action at 12:45 p.m. with the men's 4x200m relay.
