'LaToya Thomas Day' Set For April 22nd In Greenville
GREENVILLE, Miss. -- Senior all-American LaToya Thomas will be honored by her hometown of Greenville, Miss. for her acclaimed career at Mississippi State University by Greenville/Washington County citizens. The festivities will be on Tuesday, April 22 at 1 p.m. in the Greenville-Weston High School auditorium. The ceremony will be open to the public on a first come, first serve basis.
Greenville mayor Paul Artman along with Washington County Board of Supervisors president Al Rankins will present Thomas, a three-time Kodak All-American, with a proclamation of "LaToya Thomas Day". The proclamation will recognize Thomas' achievements on the court, in the classroom and her many contributions to the community. University administrators and athletic department officials will also be in attendance.
"We are very happy to honor her in any way," said Greenville mayor Paul Artman. "It is very fitting to find someone with this talent that should be honored."
In addition, the local MSU alumni chapter is giving Thomas an enduring tribute by endowing $5,000 to the MSU Foundation to be matched by contributors in the community. The proceeds will go to an annual scholarship in Thomas' name for a graduate of Greenville-Weston High School who will attend Mississippi State.
"She has done so much for the local sport. We are celebrating by continuing to endow a scholarship in her name in honor of the good work she has done," said mayor Artman.
Following the presentation there will be a reception open to the general public to meet with Thomas.
