Maholm, Mungle Earn All-America Team Honors
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Paul Maholm of Holly Springs, Miss., has been named to the 14th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers (NCBWA) All-America third team, while freshman designated hitter-outfielder Jon Mungle of Memphis, Tenn., has earned honorable mention status on the 2002 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team.
Maholm, a second-team All-SEC selection this year, posted a 10-3 record and a 3.43 earned run average as a sophomore, leading the Bulldogs in wins (10), innings pitched (102.1), strikeouts (77) and complete games (6). Five of those complete-game pitching stints and seven of the wins came against Southeastern Conference competition. Maholm was a first-team freshman all-America team pick in 2001.
In his first season of competition at Mississippi State, Mungle posted a .341 batting average, ranking second on the team with eight home runs and 21 extra-base hits. He played in all but two of MSU's 59 games, drawing 49 starts, 27 as the designated hitter and 22 in left field.
