MSU's Chris Young Named SEC Pitcher Of The Week
Young (5-1, 3.65) earned the honor after picking up the win in a 10-5 SEC Tournament berth-clinching Bulldog victory over Mississippi in Sunday's regular-season series finale. The win nailed down the Bulldogs' 16th consecutive berth in the league tournament.
In his first career SEC start and first start at Dudy Noble Field, the Bulldog right-hander blanked the 16th-ranked Rebels over the first five innings and allowed one earned run in a sterling 7-2/3 inning mound stint. It was the third career win in as many decisions against Mississippi for Young, who walked two and struck out four.
The victory completed a season-first SEC series sweep for defending SEC Tournament champ Mississippi State (33-22-1). The Bulldogs take on seventh-ranked and second-seeded Alabama (44-12) Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the eight-team, double-elimination SEC Tournament.
State's win also marked the 1,000th career win in 25 seasons of coaching in the Southeastern Conference for Bulldog skipper Ron Polk.
