MSU NOTES: Mississippi State closed out its 2002 regular season schedule with a five-game win streak, topping UAB and Samford in Birmingham and then sweeping instate SEC rival and 16th-ranked Mississippi in a three-game series at Dudy Noble Field. The sweep moved the Bulldogs into seventh place in the SEC overall standings and on to the eight-team, double-elimination SEC Tournament May 22-26 in Hoover, Ala. The Bulldogs will be playing in an SEC-leading 16th-consecutive SEC baseball tournament, meeting Western Division champ Alabama in an opening round matchup Wednesday (1 p.m.) * MATTHEW BRINSON drove in four runs with his 13th and 14th home runs to lead MSU in Sunday's SEC tourney-clinching 10-5 win. Brinson drove in eight runs during the weekend series, raising his team-leading total to 71 * Junior righty CHRIS YOUNG (5-1, 3.65), in his first SEC start and third career start overall, worked 7.2 innings and picked up the win. MSU sophomore PAUL MAHOLM (9-3, 3.47) registered his fourth SEC complete-game victory in MSU's 12-2 series-opening win over UM. Maholm allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out four * Sophomore designated hitter ROBBY GOODSON (.375) went 5-for-11 with two doubles and six RBI in the UM series and hit .500 (10x20) with 10 RBI in five games last week. Goodson, hitting a team-high .390 against SEC teams, is riding a career-best eight-game hitting streak * Bulldog skipper RON POLK reached another coaching milestone with Sunday's season-extending win over Mississippi. The winningest coach in SEC history has now won 1,000 games in 25 seasons (23 at MSU) coaching in the Southeastern Conference (1,000-494-1).TEAM TOTALS:
