Seventh-Inning Burst Lifts UNO Past State 7-3
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- J.D. Huether and Gabe Trevizo lashed back-to-back doubles to spark a four-run UNO rally in the seventh inning Tuesday night and lead the Privateers to a 7-3 win over Mississippi State at Dudy Noble Field.
New Orleans (15-9) used a walk and four consecutive hits in the inning to break a 2-2 deadlock and secure the Privateers' ninth win in 11 games.
Huether and Trevizo each went 3-for-5 to account for half of UNO's 12 hits.
UNO starter Mark Stander (2-2) checked the Bulldogs on three hits and gave up two unearned runs during a strong six-inning pitching performance. Jared Bahnsen worked the final three frames to earn his first save.
The Bulldogs led briefly when Casey Long opened the third inning with an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Matthew Brinson's fly ball to right. But UNO answered quickly, scoring twice in the fourth off MSU starter Jacob Blakeney. Huether and Trevizo singled, Chris Adams followed with a double to right-center field and Brad Domreis lofted a sacrifice fly to right to put UNO on top 2-1.
State parlayed an error, a hit batsman, a walk and a sacrifice fly by Brent Lewis into a run that knotted the score at 2-2 in the fifth inning. Lewis went 2-for-4 to lead the Bulldogs at the plate.
Two innings later UNO broke that deadlock, sending eight batters to the plate during the deciding seventh-inning rally.
Jeff Lacher (0-2), the third of four Bulldog hurlers in the game, took the loss for MSU. He lasted 2/3 of an inning and was charged with all four UNO runs in the seventh.
MSU and UNO conclude their two-game midweek set Wednesday at 3 p.m. Senior Ryan Carroll (0-0, 6.43) has been tabbed for his first career start while junior lefty Brandon Migues (1-0, 4.43) will open on the mound for UNO.
