Diamond Dogs Blank JSU 9-0 For Sixth Straight Win
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State (7-1-1) scored six runs in the second inning and six Bulldog pitchers combined for the club's first shutout of the year Wednesday afternoon as MSU blanked Jackson State 9-0 at Dudy Noble Field. It was the sixth MSU shutout in the last seven meetings with the Tigers (4-6).
The Bulldogs were out-hit 6-5 but took advantage of 13 walks, three hit batsmen and four wild pitches to register their sixth straight win of the young season.
Steve Gendron and Casey Long delivered two-run singles during the six-run second inning that saw 10 Bulldogs come to the plate. Five of the six runs were charged to JSU freshman starter Nicholas White (0-1), who retired the Bulldogs in order in the first but failed to retire any of the five batters he faced in the second.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third inning with a trio of walks, a hit batsman and a sacrifice fly by Long, his third RBI of the game.
Jeff Lacher allowed three hits and walked two in three innings of shutout mound work as the Bulldog starter. Chris Young, the fifth of six MSU hurlers, struck out four of the seven batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings to earn the win.
The Bulldogs open a three-game weekend series against first-time opponent Loyola Marymount (5-12) Friday at Dudy Noble Field.
Shortstop Bryant Lange paced Jackson State at the plate with two hits.
