Harrison Captures Tallahassee ITA Summer Circuit Singles Title

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After transferring to Mississippi State last week, Madison Harrison already has her Bulldog career off and running. Taking part in the 2015 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit, Harrison captured the Tallahassee Open singles title on Monday.
Harrison picked up five wins, including defeating four of the region’s top eight seeds over the span of three days, to capture the singles title.
After receiving a first-round bye, Harrison kicked off play by defeating Gonzaga freshman Alex Bourguignon 6-4, 7-6. In the round of 16 is where she took down her first seeded player, beating fourth-seed Emma Kurtz 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(7).
In the quarterfinals, Harrison drew Florida State’s Emily Fanning, the region’s fifth seed. Harrison downed Fanning in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals, where she faced Virginia’s Maci Epstein. The bracket’s top seed, who captured 30 singles victories in her junior year at UVA, took the opening set from Harrison, but the Bulldog sophomore bounced back to take the match 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(9).
Harrison’s final test was against Florida State’s Yukako Noi, the region’s third seed. Noi, who was an Atlantic 10 First Team selection in 2013 and 2014 before transferring to FSU, was unable to find her footing against Harrison, as State’s newest addition captured the ITA Summer Circuit Tallahassee Singles title with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Not just taking part in singles play, Harrison also made a run to the doubles semifinals with teammate Christiana Brigante, picking up an 8-1 victory in the round of 16 against Rachel Carroll and Avery Hunter and an 8-4 quarterfinals win against Daryn Ellison and Sydney Ellison to reach the final four.
