Diamond Dawgs Enjoy Successful Spring in Classroom

STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the 10th-straight semester under the direction of head coach John Cohen, the Mississippi State baseball team recorded a grade point average of 3.00 or better, the MSU Office of Athletic Academics announced Thursday. The Diamond Dawgs registered a composite 3.07 GPA in the just-concluded spring semester. Thursday’s announcement marked the 12th time in 14 semesters under Cohen the MSU baseball team produced at least a 3.00 GPA.
Senior infielder Seth Heck led the way with a perfect 4.0 GPA on his way to being named Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season. Joining Heck on the President’s Scholar List with GPAs above 3.80 were outfielders Reid Humphreys and Brent Rooker.
In addition, four Bulldogs made the Dean’s Scholar List for tallying GPAs between 3.50-3.79: All-SEC freshman Ryan Gridley, fellow freshman Cole Gordon, senior catcher Cody Walker and redshirt junior right-hander Preston Brown.
In all, 23 players recorded a GPA of 3.00 or better this spring fall. Of the 206 courses taken by the team, 80 percent resulted in A’s or B’s (165), up from 77 percent this past fall.
Five Diamond Dawgs graduated this spring: Derrick Armstrong (Kinesiology), Trevor Fitts (Kinesiology), Seth Heck (Business Management), Ross Mitchell (Business Administration and Marketing) and Wes Rea (Interdisciplinary Studies).
