Cohen's Club Headed To NCAA Lafayette Regional

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Coming off its most successful Southeastern Conference campaign since 1997, the Mississippi State baseball team was selected as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Lafayette Regional, the selection committee announced Monday. The Bulldogs are part of a NCAA-record 10 Southeastern Conference teams on the official Road to Omaha.
The Bulldogs (37-22) will play San Diego State (42-19) Friday at 1 p.m. C.T. in game one of the regional. The opener will be televised live on ESPN3 from M.L. Tigue Moore Field in Lafayette, La. The Aztecs were an automatic qualifier for the tournament after winning the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Friday's game will mark the first meeting between the two schools.
Following MSU's game, host Louisiana-Lafayette (53-7), the sixth seed nationally, will play Jackson State (31-23) at 6 p.m. C.T. The game will also be televised on ESPN3. The Bulldogs and Ragin' Cajuns have met just twice before, splitting a two-game set at Dudy Noble Field back in 1991 when ULL was known as Southwestern Louisiana University. Against Jackson State, MSU is 50-8 all-time. Both ULL (Sun Belt) and JSU (SWAC) were automatic qualifiers.
The Maroon and White are playing in their 34th NCAA Tournament, owning a 92-74 record all-time in the Big Dance. MSU holds a 68-39 mark in 28 NCAA Regionals. Last season, Cohen's club made it to the NCAA College World Series Championship Series, finishing as a finalist in the 64-team tournament.
Should the Bulldogs walk away winners in the Lafayette regional, it would be MSU's 12th NCAA Regional championship. Starkville's Team would then advance to its sixth NCAA Super Regional to face the winner of the NCAA Oxford Regional, which features host Ole Miss, Washington, Georgia Tech and Jacksonville State.
