Happy Wednesday again to everyone. I hope you all enjoyed Easter weekend as March ended and we turned the calendar into a fun month of April.
Super Bulldog Weekend is just a little more than two weeks away and several of our teams are finishing up or entering the stretch run of their seasons. It’s a beautiful time of year to enjoy Bulldog athletics and I look forward to seeing everybody on campus over the coming weeks.
SUPER BULLDOG WEEKEND KICKS OFF APRIL 18
Consider this your friendly reminder that this year’s Super Bulldog Weekend begins on Thursday evening when our Diamond Dawgs host Auburn in a match-up televised by ESPNU at 6:30 p.m. In fact, Mississippi State is lucky enough to be hosting the 2013 SEC Women’s Tennis Championship on campus that week, which begins Wednesday morning with the first round matches.
Make sure you visit our SBW page at hailstate.com/gameday for updates on the weekend, including a full schedule of events.
In addition to baseball and tennis, our track and field team is hosting the Jace Lacoste Invitational, volleyball will put on an alumni game and our new soccer coach Aaron Gordon makes his home debut in an exhibition against Southern Miss on Saturday morning.
As always, Coach Mullen and the football team will host the annual Maroon-White Spring Game, with a few changes this year for those of us sitting safely in the stands. As progress continues on the renovation and expansion of Davis Wade Stadium, the game will get started at 1 p.m. – leaving plenty of time to get to Dudy Noble for the baseball series finale at 4 – and only the east side of the stadium will be open, with the southeast corner by The Junction as the only open entrance. We encourage you to arrive early for a closer look at both expansion and the team as this will limit our capacity to 25,000.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GOLF TEAMS
It would be a disservice to both our men’s and women’s golf teams if I didn’t take a moment to recognize and congratulate them for their outstanding work recently.
Coach Homan’s No. 28-ranked men’s team just won its third tournament of the season by sealing up a big victory at the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate. Coming in at 18-under-par, our Bulldogs were 15 strokes ahead of the next-closest team, beating out Southern Miss, Jackson State and the host team Ole Miss in the process.
Last week, Coach Brown-Lemm and the women’s team posted their eighth-straight Top 10 finish, the most recent one coming in the Briar’s Creek Invitational, where they finished ahead of Top 50 teams Wisconsin and Penn State.
TRACK AND FIELD UP TO 13TH IN COUNTRY
In addition to having a pair of individual National Champions, I’m very proud of Coach Dudley and our track and field team for the season they’re putting together. Through just two meets, they have 21 individual Top 10 finishes, including 12 in the Top 5.
BIG BASEBALL SERIES THIS WEEKEND
Make sure you get to town this weekend for a very big SEC series as Coach Cohen’s club hosts the Florida Gators. We always want to win and baseball can be a frustrating sport at times, but we remain very excited about what our Diamond Dawgs can accomplish this season and they need our support to do so. I found this to be an interesting stat, that we’ve have yet to be outscored in a series this season, despite some tough series losses. The law of averages suggests, eventually, you get the breaks and win games. After all, the main idea of baseball is to score more than the other team.
NEW MSU SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF FALLEN HERO
I wanted to take a moment to pass along a somber but uplifting note I received late last week. After a shooting at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia took three lives, the family of one of the victims has set up a scholarship in his honor for MSU.
Marine Cpl. Jacob Wooley was a native of Our State and the Jacob Wooley Memorial Scholarship will be “a way to establish a legacy for Jacob, because he loved Mississippi State, especially Mississippi State football,” his mother Linda Wooley said.
Cpl. Wooley had plans to become a minister at the end of his enlistment. The scholarship is being administered by the John Stallworth Foundation in Huntsville and information on donating or applying can be found at johnstallworth.com.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals –
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this Update.
Hail State!
