McDonald Wins Second-Straight State Championship In All-MSU Final

MADISON, Miss. - In match-play finals featuring two Mississippi State Bulldogs, All-SEC freshman golfer Ally McDonald defeated MSU Assistant Coach Leigh Phillips 8 and 7 to capture her second-consecutive Mississippi Women's Golf Association state championship.
"I enjoyed competing against my assistant coach," McDonald said. "It is always a fun tournament and I am blessed to win it for the second year in a row."
The March 28, 2012 SEC Women's Golfer of the Week beat Phillips after winning seven holes on the front nine with six birdies. Phillips fell to the 2012 NCAA West Regional qualifier on No. 11 after three-putting for bogey.
"Ally hit her irons better than I have seen her hit them in a long time," Phillips explained to the Clarion-Ledger. "As a coach, you're happy to see that. I am really proud of her. I wish I could have played a little better and competed with her, but even if I had played great, the results would have been the same. It was fun to watch."
Phillips reached the finals at Colonial Country Club's Deerfield course after defeating current MSU sophomore and 2010 champion Mary Langdon Gallagher and 11-time MWGA State Amateur champion Cissye Gallagher.
