Stratton Named First-Team Louisville Slugger All-American
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State pitching standout Chris Stratton can add All-American to his growing list of junior season accolades.
The Tupelo, Miss., native was named Thursday by Collegiate Baseball newspaper to the 2012 Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American first team. Stratton is one of 10 conference players or pitchers of the year named to the 17-player first unit. He becomes MSU’s first baseball all-American since infielder Brandon Turner and John Bench Award-winning catcher Ed Easley in 2007.
Stratton (11-1, 2.21 ERA) registered his SEC-leading 11th win and in an SEC Tournament championship-clinching 3-0 win over Vanderbilt a career-first save in Mississippi State’s 5-1 run through last week’s league tournament at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala.
The Louisville Slugger All-America Team selection is another in a growing list for the talented right-hander. On May 14 he received the C Spire Ferriss Trophy, given each year the top collegiate baseball player in Mississippi. Last week Stratton was named 2012 SEC Pitcher of the Year and accorded first-team All-Southeastern Conference status. Also this month Stratton was named a semifinalist for two national player of the year awards, the NCBWA’s Dick Howser Trophy and MLB/USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award.
