Demarcus Henderson Tabbed For SEC Freshman Of Week Honors
Henderson extended his personal-best and team season-best matching hitting streak to eight games Sunday, and with seven hits last week raised his seasonal batting average to a club-leading .414. Henderson notched his second and third multiple-hit games in helping the 21st-ranked Bulldogs claim four of their five games last week.
The Bulldog outfielder becomes the fourth MSU yearling a;;-time to earn the award, joining pitcher Chris Stratton (2010) and two-time infielding honorees Brandon Turner (2007) and Daryl Norris (2011). Henderson hit .438 with a .500 on-base percentage over the last five games as the Bulldogs improved to 14-3 for their best start since the 2006 campaign. He opens the week sharing the team lead with five stolen bases and three sacrifice flies.
Mississippi State plays its first road games and faces its first ranked opponent with this week's road trip to Louisiana. MSU (14-3) faces Southeastern Louisiana (11-5) in 6 p.m. games Tuesday and Wednesday in Hammond, La., and then takes on No. 13 LSU (13-3) in Baton Rouge, La., in a three-game series this weekend to open the 2012 SEC baseball season.
