Trio To Be Inducted Into Mississippi State Sports Hall Of Fame

Sherrill is the university's all-time winningest and longest tenured football coach, posting 75 career victories from 1991-2003. He led the Bulldogs to the Southeastern Conference championship game in 1998 and his teams won 33 games over a four-year stretch from 1997-2000. He is a member of the Cotton, Gator and Independence Bowl halls of fame, along with the athletic halls of fame at Texas A&M and the University of Pittsburgh.
A three-time all-SEC selection and two-time all-American, Jeff Malone still holds Mississippi State's basketball records for career and single-season points scored, and career and single-season field goals made. He led the SEC in scoring in 1982-83 and was named the league's player of the year. Following his career at State, Malone was the 10th overall selection in the 1983 NBA draft and was a two-time NBA All-Star.
Former tennis great Hugh Thomson lettered in tennis, track and cross country from 1966-68. A three-time second-team all-SEC selection, Thomson helped lead the tennis Bulldogs to the SEC team title in 1967 and second place finishes in 1966 and 1968. The Bulldogs finished third, third and 13th nationally during the three-year stretch. Individually, Thomson posted a 54-2 record against SEC competition from 1965-68, and won seven SEC individual titles (3 singles, 4 doubles). Following his career at Mississippi State, Thomson began a career in coaching. He led the Mississippi State tennis squad in 1969-70, was twice named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year (1979-80) while at UAB and won two SEC titles at Auburn in 1983 and 1984.
