Ilyushin Defeats Former Number One, Advances To Quarterfinals
STARKVILLE, Miss. - In the 2011 USA F15 Futures tournament in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida, Bulldog tennis star Artem Ilyushin ousted former Ole Miss stand out Catalin Gard to advance to the quarterfinals today.
After breezing through the first round of play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mitchell Frank, Ilyushin faced a tough opponent in Gard heading into the second round.
Gard, the Galatia, Romania native, was ranked number one in the country during his 2005 campaign at Ole Miss. Currently, Gard is ranked 472nd in the world but has found himself as high as 224th in 2007.
In an easy two-setter, Ilyushin took down the #5 seed Gard 6-0, 6-2. Ilyushin is also competing in the semifinals of doubles action today.
Ilyushin will face Kiryk Harbatsiuk in the quarterfinals today followed by his doubles slate at 5 p.m.
