Govero Named SEC Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Of The Year, All-SEC Second Team

Starkville, Miss. - Mississippi State senior Mary Kathryn Govero continues to add to her list of accolades as she was named the SEC Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was voted to the All-SEC Second Team by the league coaches. The postseason awards were announced Tuesday by the league office.
A native of Clinton, Miss., Mary Kathryn Govero has played in 126 career games, which is second all-time at Mississippi State, while has started in 88 contests during her four years. She currently ranks 12th on the all-time scoring list at MSU with 1,150 points. Govero has hit 178 career three point field goals which ranks third in school history while ranking fourth in 3-point field goal attempts with 477.
She scored a career-high 28 points in the season opener against USC Upstate this season and has scored in double figures in 11 of the last 13 games. She was instrumental in helping lead Mississippi State to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009 and 2010 including a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 last season.
Govero converted on 74 3-point field goals during her junior season which ranks as fifth-best all time at State and has made 67 to date this year which ranks sixth-best in school history.
She is a member of the SEC Community Service team this season and was named to the Capitol One Academic All-District First Team this season. She compiled a 3.92 GPA, earning her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and is currently in her first semester in pursuit of her graduate degree.
Govero becomes the first Mississippi State women's basketball player to receive the Scholar-Athlete award since its inception in 2004.
Her inclusion on the All-SEC second team marks the third consecutive season Mississippi State has put a player on an All-SEC team.
Govero and the Lady Bulldogs open play in the first round of the SEC Tournament on Thursday, as they take on Auburn at 9 p.m. CT. This year's tournament will be held at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.
