Bulldogs Look To Rebound At Tennessee In Historical Game

STARKVILLE, Miss. – When Mississippi State travels to Tennessee on Saturday, not only will the Bulldogs be looking to get back into the win column following their loss to LSU on Wednesday, they will also bid farewell to legendary broadcaster Jack Cristil.
Earlier this week, the iconic Cristil, who’s been behind the mic with MSU sports for 58 years, announced his immediate retirement following the game in Knoxville. Fans worldwide can tune in and listen to his final call of Bulldog action free of charge on Maroon to the Max by simply visiting www.mstateathletics.com/m2mlive at game time and clicking on the audio linkassociated with the MSU-UT game.
In addition to the regular network stations carrying the broadcast, the 5 p.m. contest can be
found on XM Radio at Channel 200 and on Sirius Radio at Channel 213.
ESPN will air the game, with Brad Nessler handing the play-by-play duties and Jimmy Dykes serving as the analyst. ESPN is also expected to pay tribute to Cristil, who has been doing MSU basketball for 54 years.
“It’s been an honor and pleasure to have the opportunity to work with a legend such as Jack Cristil, the greatest sports announcer of all time,” 13th-year MSU coach Rick Stansbury said. “I was always amazed with how he was able to control his thoughts, and how he was never lost for words. I consider Jack a close friend, and I will dearly miss our pregame and postgame conversations. There will never be another one like him.”
The Bulldogs head to Thompson-Boling Arena with a 14-13 overall ledger and a 6-7 mark in SEC play following their 84-82 setback to LSU on Wednesday. The Volunteers are 17-11, 7-6 following their 60-51 win at No. 18 Vanderbilt. Prior to that game, UT had lost four of its last five games.
MSU, which hasn’t won at Tennessee since 1999, will be shorthanded on Saturday as freshman Jalen Steele saw his season come to an abrupt end against the Tigers after he tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee in the second half.
Steele, a Knoxville native who had started the last six games, will be replaced in the starting lineup by senior Ravern Johnson. The Lyon, Miss., product leads the Bulldogs with his 17.0 scoring clip, while his 65 3-pointers are fourth in the SEC.
Also in double-digits for MSU are Dee Bost (16.4), Renardo Sidney (14.3) and Kodi Augustus (11.6). In SEC play only, Bost is first in assists and eighth in scoring, while Sidney is third in rebounding and 16th in scoring.
The Volunteers are led by Scotty Hopson’s 17.4 scoring clip, followed by Tobias Harris 14.2
After Saturday, the Bulldogs wrap up road play on Wednesday at Arkansas before returning home on March 5 for the regular-season finale against South Carolina.
