Tyler Whitney Named To SEC Baseball Community Service Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mississippi State senior pitcher Tyler Whitney has been named to the 2010 SEC Baseball Community Service Team, the Southeastern Conference announced Monday. It's the second consecutive year Whitney has represented the Bulldogs on the 12-player squad, which annually recognizes the superior community service contributions of an athlete from each of the league's 12-member institutions.
Whitney was active in a variety of community service projects in the Starkville area throughout his four-year MSU career. As a senior he worked with the Starkville Habitat for Humanity project and was a volunteer worker in the annual MSU Halloween Carnival for Starkville youth. He was a frequent visitor to Starkville schools, undertaking efforts to promote reading and citizenship with the Hero's Breakfasts program at Sudduth Elementary School, the Bully's Book Blitz program at Ward-Stewart Elementary, and the Bulldog Behavior Bash at Overstreet Elementary School. He sorted and delivered canned foods for Starkville area residents during the MSU M-Club's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, and participated in an on-campus trash pickup/cleanup project.
The Lakeland, Tenn., native completed his undergraduate degree work at Mississippi State in 3-1/2 years, and the four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection has recently been named the recipient of a Brad Davis Community Service Postgraduate Scholarship from the Southeastern Conference. He is currently enrolled in Mississippi State's MBA program.
Whitney pitched in 47 games and made 32 starts during his MSU career, registering eight wins, two complete-game performances and 156 career strikeouts.
