Powers Finalist For Ferriss Trophy; Presentation Set Monday At Delta State

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State senior first baseman Connor Powers is one of three finalists for the 2010 Cellular South Ferriss Trophy set to be announced Monday at 6:30 p.m. in ceremonies at Delta State University's Bolgna Performing Arts Center in Cleveland, Miss.
Pitchers Todd McInnis of Southern Miss and Drew Pomeranz of Ole Miss are the other two finalists up for the Mississippi collegiate player of the year award, which is named after former Delta State baseball coaching great and former Boston Red Sox and Mississippi State pitching standout Dave "Boo" Ferriss.
Powers finished his senior campaign leading the Bulldogs and ranking among the SEC leaders with a .379 batting average, 81 hits, 18 doubles, 16 home runs, 68 RBI, 41 walks, a .696 slugging percentage and a .483 on-base percentage. He ranks fourth at MSU with 54 career home runs, fifth with 471 total bases, tied for fifth with Jon Knott (1998-01) with 206 RBI, and tied for seventh with 52 doubles in 202 career games played.
The Naperville, Ill., native is bidding to become the third Mississippi State player to receive the Ferriss Trophy. Former Bulldogs Thomas Berkery and Edward Easley were selected by a panel of professional baseball scouts, collegiate coaches and media representatives for the award in 2006 (Berkery) and 2007 (Easley).
