SEC Tabs Connor Powers For Player Of The Week Honors

STARKVILLE, Miss. - For the second time this season Mississippi State senior first baseman Connor Powers has been honored as the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week.
Powers (.414), who leads the Southeastern Conference in both RBI (53) and slugging percentage (.767), turned in a remarkable 12-hit, 8-RBI performance in four games last week and helped power the Bulldogs to their second SEC series win of the season.
The Naperville, Ill., native hit at a sizzling .706 clip with a .773 on-base percentage over the past four games. He registered three-hit plate performances in a 9-5 midweek win over South Alabama and again in all three games of the Bulldogs' Super Bulldog Weekend series against Tennessee. Powers' hits total included six doubles and his 10th home run of the year, leading to a 1.235 slugging percentage. He laced a school record-tying three of those two-baggers in Sunday's series-clinching 14-6 win over the Vols and was credited with his team-best sixth (vs. South Alabama) and seventh (Sunday vs. UT) game-winning RBI.
Powers reached base 18 times in 22 plate appearances (12 hits, four walks, one HBP and one error) last week and scored 11 runs.
The honor is the second of the campaign for Powers, who also paces the Bulldogs with 55 hits and 15 doubles. He was selected March 9 as the SEC Player of the Week following a three-home run, 15-RBI showing in the four-game BankFirst Baseball Challenge at Dudy Noble Field.
Mississippi State (19-17, 5-10 SEC) closes out a nine-game homestand Tuesday hosting Alcorn State (17-20) in a 6:30 p.m. contest. MSU travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., this weekend for a three-game SEC Western Division series against the Alabama Crimson Tide (22-15, 5-10 SEC).
