Bulldog Men's Golf Looks To Carry Momentum Into Furman Intercollegiate

"Our focus this weekend will be to play like we did in the last round of the Seminole Intercollegiate," said seventh-year head coach Clay Homan. "We want to play with consistency and limit the number of mistakes we make. If we do that, we will be competitive and eventually figure out how to win"
This is second time ever the MSU men's golf team has competed in the Furman Intercollegiate, with the prior event occurring in 1983 where State posted a runner-up finish among the 22-team field.
This year's field consists of 24 teams including last year's champions East Carolina and 17th-ranked Clemson, with the Bulldogs being the lone Southeastern Conference club competing in the 54-hole event.
State is led by true freshman Robi Calvesbert who has been the Bulldogs top finisher in the previous four tournaments. Calvesbert is currently MSU's leader in first and second round stroke average as well as overall stroke average and ranks among the SEC's top 20 in terms of stroke average. In his previous tournament Calvesbert garnered a 15th-place finish and set career-lows for first and third round scores.
Sophomore Lee Heaton has been active in every tournament this season for the Maroon and White and continues that streak at the Furman Intercollegiate. Heaton has been MSU's top finisher twice this season and finished among the top 20 three times, including a 16th-place finish in his previous tournament at the Seminole Intercollegiate, which included two even-par round efforts.
True freshmen Mike Genovese and Brad Mason will both be active this weekend for MState. Genovese has been State's top finisher twice this season as well as two top 20 finishes and boasts a stroke average of 74.1 strokes per 18 holes. Mason is MSU's leader in third round stroke average and notched an even-par third round score in his previous event at the Seminole Intercollegiate. Sophomore Brad Thompson rounds out the Bulldog lineup.
The Bulldogs will tee off tomorrow morning at approximately 7 a.m. CT and live stats will be available at www.mstateathletics.com.
