STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State left-hander Nick Routt has been named to the 2009 SEC All Freshman baseball team announced Tuesday by the Southeastern Conference. The honor team is selected by a vote of the SEC’s 12 head baseball coaches.
The rookie southpaw from Silver Spring, Md., compiled a 5-3 record and a 4.15 earned run average, leading the MSU staff with five wins, 13 starts, 86.2 innings pitched and 87 strikeouts. Routt shared the league lead with four complete games (at No. 3 Georgia, at No. 9 Arkansas, vs.
Auburn and at Tennessee), all registered in successive Southeastern Conference appearances. He struck out a staff season-high 12 batters and pitched a staff season-longest 9.0 innings April 4 in State’s 8-3 win over Auburn.
Routt becomes the second Mississippi State player to be named to the league’s all-rookie team. Current MSU first baseman Connor Powers was a 2007 SEC All Freshman team selection.
