STARKVILLE, Miss. ? With a 24-yard field goal with the clock winding down, Derek DePasquale and the Maroon team edged the White team 24-21 in the closing spring scrimmage in front of a record crowd of 31,606 at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field Saturday evening.
The two teams would begin the first quarter of action, trading field goals. Starting the game with a 5-3 lead, the White squad would go up 8-3 with a 25-yard field goal from Sean Brauchle, who would connect on a 57-yard attempt in a kicking session later in the game. The Maroon team would respond and cut the lead to two points on the next possession with a 34-yard effort from DePasquale.
The White squad would answer once again on the next possession with a 6-play, 31-yard drive that was capped with a Brauchle 46 yard field-goal to give the White team an 11-6 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, the White squad would keep momentum with the first touchdown of the day scored by Anthony Dixon on a two-yard scamper, giving the White squad an 18-6 lead. The 3-play drive was highlighted by a 63-yard connection from Chris Relf to O’Neal Wilder which put the ball on the Maroon 5-yard line.
The Maroon squad would quickly respond on its next possession with its first touchdown. On a 13-play, 60-yard drive, Sylvester Hemphill would capitalize with a 2-yard run to close the score to 18-13.
On its first offensive possession of the second half, the Maroon group would again sustain a lengthy drive to take its first lead of the night. On a 10-play, 85-yard drive, Tyson Lee found tight-end Kendrick Cook open on a third and goal play in which Cook would fight to the pylon and score. Lee also found Terrance Davis in the endzone on the two-point try to give the Maroon squad a 21-18 lead.
In the final quarter of play, the White squad knotted the game’s score when Brauchle connected on a 47-yard field goal with 10:29 remaining. After a missed field goal by DePasquale for the Maroon team, the White team would take over only to throw an interception and give the Maroon squad the last scoring opportunity. In the closing seconds, it was DePasquale’s 24-yard field-goal that would be the difference.
Lee would lead all passers connecting on 19-33 passes for 251 yards. Chris Relf ended the game with 195 passing yard, hitting on 13 of 26 attempts. Hemphill ended the game, rushing for 33 yards on eight carries while Dixon rushed 11 times for 59 yards. Leon Berry would lead all receivers with eight catches for 125 yards while O’Neal Wilder had four catches for 122 yards.
