MSU Track Squads Face Top Teams In The SEC At War Eagle Invitational

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State men’s and women’s track teams travel to Auburn Friday for the War Eagle Invitational, an event that features some of the top teams in the South.

SEC foes Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Vanderbilt are going to offer a tough mid-season challenge for the MSU squad, something coach Al Schmidt sees as rewarding.

“It’s definitely a big meet with the Florida men and women,” said Schmidt, whose teams are ranked 31st and 43rd nationally by the USTFCCCA. “It will give us a serious challenge and opportunity.”

Standout sprinters D’Angelo Cherry, Dwight Mullings and Justin Christian have the chance to face a greater caliber of athletes in their respective events.

“We want our kids to concentrate on getting stronger in their events as we prepare for Penn Relays,” Schmidt said.

The main goal for the weekend is finding out where they stand heading into the Penn Relays, scheduled for April 23-25 in Philadelphia, Penn.

Friday’s action for the Maroon and White begins at 4:30 p.m. with the men’s hammer throw, followed by the 1,500-meter run.
