Rising Senior Sainz Wins CDGA Amateur Championship

NORTH RIVERSIDE, Ill. ? Rising senior Carlos Sainz, Jr. won the Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA) Amateur Championship this past Thursday at Riverside Golf Club in North Riverside, Ill. The victory for Sainz comes after a runner-up finish the previous year and with this year’s win, takes the lead in the point standings for the 2008 CDGA Player of the Year.
“The experience from last year helped,” said Sainz. “I thought I could play well here, it’s a good course where you have to hit it straight.”
The Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA) is a non-profit association of member clubs and individual golfers in Illinois and parts of Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan. The CDGA Amateur Championship is also the Midwest’s oldest amateur championship, dating back to 1914.
Sainz competed in a team-high 13 tournaments this past season for the Bulldogs, who recorded one of their best seasons in school history. Highlights included a top-five finish at the SEC Championship, a fourth-place finish at the NCAA East Regional and the team earned a spot at the 2008 NCAA Championship. The rising senior was MState’s top finisher three times, with four top-20 finishes and one coming in the top 10.
Sainz will return to MSU this fall with a veteran squad that includes five seniors.
