First Full Scrimmage Deemed

Working at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field for the first time in nearly three weeks, the Bulldogs ran more than 90 plays as the team practiced for almost three hours.
“We made some nice plays in the passing game,” Croom said. “All-in-all I think we got some good things accomplished.
Starting quarterback Wesley Carroll completed five-of-eight passes (with a drop and a batted attempt) for 46 yards in the first two series of the scrimmage before giving way to transfer Tyson Lee and redshirt freshman Chris Relf for the remainder of the day.
Carroll marched the Bulldog offense down the field for a nine-play, 43-yard drive culminating in a 39-yard Eric Richards field goal to start the workout. Lee’s first two drives with the second-unit offense stalled before a seven-play drive ended in the scrimmage’s first touchdown when Lee hit Brandon McRae for a score from eight yards out.
Lee moved the offense well throughout the day as he and Relf split time working with both the first and second units. The
Lee’s lone mistake came on a pass batted by Quinton Wesley at the line of scrimmage, and turned into the biggest defensive play of the afternoon. Defensive lineman Jessie Bowman picked the batted ball out of the air and rumbled 69 yards for a touchdown.
Leading the rushing attack was freshman Robert Elliott, who finished with 87 yards rushing on 23 attempts. Relf, who along with Lee wore maroon jerseys rather than customary quarterback red, rushed five times for 31 yards.
Defensively, the Bulldogs were paced by rising seniors Derek Pegues and Jamar Chaney, who finished with 11 and seven tackles, respectively.
State will return to the practice fields on Thursday as they work on game and kicking situations in preparations for Saturday’s Spring Game scheduled for noon.
