Cross Country Squads Garner Academic Accolade

STARKVILLE, Miss. ? The Mississippi State University cross country squads have been recognized by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association as one of the nation’s top academic programs. The MState women were one of 158 schools, while the men were one of 98 nationwide that receive the honor.

The Southeastern Conference led the charge on the men’s side, having seven teams along with the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big East Conference. Other SEC teams on the men’s list were Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. On the women’s side, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Vanderbilt were represented. Only six SEC teams had both their male and female teams represented.

For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative grade point average. A total of 325 women’s teams compete in cross country, while 299 schools sponsor a men’s team.
