Six Lady Bulldogs Named To SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll

STARKVILLE, Miss. ??“ The Mississippi State University women's basketball placed six student-athletes on the 2007 Southeastern Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll, as announced by the league office in Birmingham today. Sophomores Robin Porter, Marneshia Richard, Lauren Roberts and Bethany Workman were all named to the squad for a second consecutive year, while junior Miayorka Johnson earned her first selection. Junior Amy Reeder was named to the squad for the third year.
Porter earned SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll honors a year ago. A clinical exercise physiology major from Abbeville, Ala., she saw action in 30 games this season, starting in 17 of those. Porter averaged 9.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest. She also scored her 500th career point.
Richard, a civil engineering major from Lamar, Miss., played in all 32 games this season. Starting in every contest, Richard broke the sophomore single season record for assists with 125. She ended the season averaging 10.3 points per game, while shooting 48.4 percent from the floor.
She has been named to the Dean's List all three semesters at MSU, was named to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll a year ago and received the Robert H. Wood Civil Engineering Scholarship. Richard is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and MClub, MState's student-athlete community service organization. She was also Mississippi State's nominee for the 2006-07 SEC Women's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Hailing from Springtown, Texas, Workman saw limited action throughout the season. She was named to the SEC Community Service Team for the second consecutive year. During her freshman campaign, she was named to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll and received the Sonny Mullins Community Service Award.
A native of Pontotoc, Miss., Reeder received the Newsom Academic Award last year, an annual award given to the top MSU student-athlete in each sport. The fitness management major saw action in 29 games during the season.
Roberts, a marketing major, earned SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll honors a year go. The Collierville, Tenn.,-native played in all 32 games this season. Johnson, an educational psychology major from Ripley, Miss., saw action in 19 contests this season, missing 13 games due to injury.
State tied for second in the league with six women's basketball players named to the squad. South Carolina led the way with 10, while Tennessee also added six. Kentucky and LSU placed five each, while Alabama and Florida had four. Arkansas, Auburn and Georgia had three recipients and Vanderbilt had two. The 2006-07 SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2006 spring, summer and fall terms.
In Sharon Fanning's 12 seasons at the helm of the program, a total of 58 student-athletes have earned SEC Academic Honor Roll honors.
The 2007 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll will be announced later this year.
