State Head Coach Chris Jans
Q:ย I asked Josh Hubbard the same question. This is the second game in a row where your team has been down by 30 points at halftime, is that something you can kind of sense in warmups?
ย CJ:ย "Iย don'tย know what Josh said, but Iย didn'tย sense it. We hadย a great dayย yesterday at practice. I thought they were really, really good considering what we had in the last outing, and where we are in the season.ย Their energy in practice was really good.ย We had a very shortย shootaround this morning because of the early startย time. Weย had toย modifyย what we normally do for gameday preparation, but they were enthusiasticย andย had a bounceย toย their step. For whatever reason, we got off to justย a horribleย start again,ย and we just played uphill all afternoon."ย
ย
Q: Four straight gamesย where the defenseย has given up at least 85 points, where are the issues on defense in your mind?
CJ:ย "Yeah, it'sย tough to even hear that.ย Certainly, I'mย aware of it.ย It'sย what I told them in the locker room that one of my job responsibilities 1A, 1B, 1C is on gameday to get our guys, and our teamย to compete at the highest level regardless of what our record is, who we are playing, what time the tip is, where the game is played at or who's available or unavailable."
ย
"That's part of my job,ย and it means a lot to me. I told themย for whatever reason thatย I'veย failed to be able to for the most part of the games to get them to play to the standard thatย we'veย created and to the expectation that our fans have come to know that we have. In the end,ย it'sย one of my major responsibilities, andย it'sย not happening. So, that obviously hurts me to my core and what we believeย in.ย We'veย just not been able to get them to play at the level that we need them to."
ย
Q:ย On gamedays, do you think the team's issues are more effort or more execution?
CJ:ย "It's definitely a combination of both, but the thing that I focused on today with them was the effort part. As a group and as a program, certainly you can point out a play here, a play there, or aย run or aย two-minuteย stretch here or there, that they played with the required effort and tenacity that you need to compete at the levelย we'reย competing atย inย thisย league."
ย
"We'reย just notย doing it right now.ย We've done it at times.ย We've done it for games. We've done it for stretches, but it hasn't been something that's in our back pocket.ย It'sย notย something that we can relyย on,ย and you always want more.ย I'veย hadย teams whereย I look back going,ย yeah,ย I thought that they didn't competeย enough. At times, you compare it to different stretches where you're like, okay that wasn't that bad.ย But certainly,ย it'sย aย combination of both."ย
ย
Q: Following up the Auburn game with three straight losses, are youย feelingย frustratedย withย the team's performances for you as a coach?ย ย
CJ: "Yeah, it feels like it wasย foreverย ago. It feels like foreverย ago whenย we had the Oleย Miss win on the road. And then came home,ย had that gameย against Auburn. Itย felt like 'Wow,ย we got some momentum. We'reย goingย toย go to South Carolina and keep this thingย going andย playย our best basketball down the stretch, which isย whatย every coach across the country is talking about. That's always the goal to be able to do that, regardless of whereย you'reย at. You want toย playingย your best right now. Rightย nowย isย when you want to start to be peaking as a basketball team, and certainlyย we'reย not."ย
ย
"So,ย it'sย more than frustrating. Whatever word is worse than frustrating,ย insert that wordย for me.ย I'mย sure, and I knowย they're [the players]ย are frustrated too. Theyย don'tย like it.ย Like I said,ย it'sย my responsibility to try to fix it and change it.ย I'mย just not doing a good enough job."ย
ย
Q: What did you see from King Grace today and how he played through an injury with nine points and zero turnovers today?
CJ: "Iย wasn'tย sure if he was going to play.ย He'sย been bothered by a groin issue the last few days, but he was on the available list, and he said he was good. So, I thought he was hesitant in his firstย run andย trying to feel it out a little bit."ย
ย
"Then, I'm not sure and I'll have to ask him, butย something clicked mentally for him, becauseย all of the sudden, he just started playing reallyย aggressively and with a lot of confidence. I obviously loved the result.ย More positive plays for him individually than negative. Obviously,ย it'sย inย aย losing cause. But for him, individuallyย hopefully, this is something that he can build onย going forward as a young player. Knowing how heย has to be ofย his mindsetย ย all the time, because of that mindset that he had, not just on the offensive end,ย but also on theย defensive end.ย He was being really aggressive and playingย the type of defenseย that he's capable of playing.ย [T.O.] Barrettย was giving usย all sorts of problems. It was too little, too late,ย butย he didย a pretty goodย job on him downย the stretch."ย ย
