Mississippi State Head Coach Chris Jans
Q: I asked you in the pregame what your message was to the team, and it was to play harder. What did you like aboutย what you saw from your team tonight?
CJ: "We kept itย realย simple after the Saturday game. Obviously, thatย wasn'tย a great point for us. It was a tough, tough day. Now, you'veย gotย to go on the road for two.ย So,ย we just kept itย pretty simpleย in terms of what wasย really important."ย
ย
"Certainly,ย we had a gameย plan.ย Weย switchedย up some ball screen coverages to try to generate some more off ourย defense, but the biggest thing we talked about for the lastย 72 hoursย was just toย competeย harder. We had two goals today,ย competeย harder andย win. I said if we accomplish the first goal, I can't promise you, but I'm pretty confident that we'll accomplish the second goal."
ย
"Like you said, especiallyย goingย the first half,ย we came outย of the gate and got off to a really, really good start.ย In the end, obviously,ย it'sย not the ending you would want in a game likeย this.ย But when you've got that big lead andย you'reย on the road, it is what it is.ย I'mย not going to spend a lot of time talkingย aboutย that with our team,ย or I may not even watch the last four minutes, how about that [laughter]?"ย
ย
Q: How much can you play yourself out of badย stretchesย by just giving the proper effort?ย
CJ: "For me,ย it'sย somethingย that'sย been ingrained in me as an athlete from just where I was coached, how I was coached in both in high school and college.ย It'sย trying toย be a big part ofย the DNA of the places thatย I'veย been the head coachย at."
ย
"We'veย had some tough outings where itย didn'tย feel like we were competing hard or hard enough, andย that'sย unacceptable.ย We'veย had a lot of serious conversations about that in our teamย spaces,ย and it can get you through.ย It'sย got to be somethingย that'sย in your back pocketย when the ballย isn'tย going through the hole orย you'reย sloppy and have some turnovers.ย That'sย something that you can rely on and count on. Weย haven'tย been in tip-top shape that way.ย I'mย not saying physical shape,ย I'mย saying justย in shape of being able to compete like that all the time. Hopefully, this is something that can propel them forward."
ย
Q: What was the game plan entering tonight's matchup especially on the defensive end?
CJ: "We were a little moreย aggressiveย than we have been, justย thinkingย we could rev our defense up and get us to fly around.ย I'mย not sure that was the smartest thing to do. It worked outย well in theย first half obviously. Then, in the second half,ย they started setting them [their screens] a little bit higher and getting us out in tooย muchย space.ย They were short rolling the big andย puttingย us at a disadvantage.ย So,ย we started picking the ballย upย lower so theyย couldn'tย do that to us. We even tried going under. But 11 [DJ Thomas] is a guy. He getsย goingย andย he'sย hard to keep out of the paint. I thought we did a decent job of keeping him out of the paint.ย Weย definitelyย switchedย it up tonight with our coverages. From the first glance, I thought it wasย pretty good"
ย
Q: Can you talk about what you saw from Quincy Ballard and Sergej Macura tonight?
CJ: "Because of matchups, we ran aย coupleย of sets forย him [Ballard] early.ย He didย a good jobย of finishing them.ย I know he'sย not getting a lot of attention rightย now,ย he could get lost in the shuffle a little bit that way but just his overall presence. Nine rebounds, three on the offensive end.ย Heย handledย the ball on the perimeter pretty well and didn't put himself in bad spots."ย
ย
"Then, Sergej made a couple of trick shots, I'm not sure I've ever seen him shoot those turnย aroundย Js. I'm hoping he knows that those were shot clock shots, and they're not going to be a part of his repertoire going forward."
ย
"They were both active, and they were very active on the glass. They were fighting,ย scratchingย and clawing. That'sย the way we've got to play โฆ That'sย whatย we'reย trying to do.ย It'sย what we preach every single day. For whatever reason, tonight it showed up."ย
ย
Q: What was the difference tonight in terms of your interior play?ย
CJ: "Iย don'tย know, we felt good. We got off to a great start.ย The bench wasย really good, and the energy was good at shoot around today. Their focus was good.ย We kept itย reallyย simple with the goals that we had of just competing no matter what it looks like. Just compete harder in every singleย opportunityย that you get.ย That confidence gets in yourย bloodstream,ย and that really helps."
ย
"But like I said andย I'llย keep saying it, if we can figure out a way to keep doing this, then I thinkย we'llย have better results.ย Obviously,ย the thing that sticks out the most isย the rebounding. We wereย really goodย against aย big physicalย team.ย They'reย a big physical team, andย I think we punched them in the face prettyย good.ย Itย kind of setย the tone that way."ย

Forward Sergej Macuraย
Q: How does it feel to have this losing streak behind you?ย
SM: "Oh, this feels amazing. Honestly,ย goodย to hop back on the winning track. Just aย greatย feeling. I know the locker room is about to beย very happy and very energetic. So,ย I'mย just happyย we'reย going home with a win."ย
ย
Q: How much wereย you guysย trying to get inย thereย and make sure that you got an advantage in the rebounding battle?ย
SM: "That was a huge part as the coaches said before the game, thatย a big part for us was playing harder likeย you guysย talked about. We just gave it our everything. I knowย I'veย been close to having double-doubles in the last couple ofย games.ย So, I just kept going with that rhythm. The other guys were allย really physicalย under the basket.ย That'sย a big part of our game, andย we'veย been emphasizing that the whole week coming up to this game so that was big for us."ย
ย
Q: Where do you feel likeย you'veย grown in the last couple of weeks?ย
SM: "I think Iย figured out how to use my physicality around the rim, and how to takeย advantageย of those rebounds andย everything. I found a way to cut to the basket with more efficiency because when we go, when we play fast, whenย we'reย running around theย court, that's when we're at our best.ย That'sย our best type of game for this team. We'reย very athletic, and we've got chemistry built onย that.ย So,ย that'sย where we excel. I think that the last couple of weeks, I've just gotten into that groove of knowing how to get rebounds and how to do everything.ย I'mย justย gladย we got the win."
