Ferrie Reflects On Record-Breaking Kick

Kicker drilled a program-best 55-yard field goal in the season opener.
STARKVILLE – Last Saturday, Mississippi State football opened up the 2025 season in Hattiesburg by claiming a 34-17 victory over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
The game itself saw a lot of positive things for the Bulldogs, such as a Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week performance from graduate transfer Will Whitson.
But one of the biggest moments of the contest was junior kicker Kyle Ferrie's 55-yard field goal in the second quarter.
The kick was boomed and looked as though it would have been good from at least 60 yards out. The field goal by Ferrie is now the longest make ever by a Mississippi State Bulldog. The record was previously held by Artie Cosby versus Memphis on October 5, 1985, when he nailed a 54-yarder.
Earlier this week, Ferrie credited subtle changes as key to making him an even better kicker, allowing him to have moments like last Saturday's.
"Obviously operationally we changed things," Ferrie said. "We got a new snapper in. He's a lefty and it's the first time I've ever had a lefty snapper. So, the spin to me as a left-footed kicker is a lot easier to see. For me being able to have that and be able to trust [my teammates is big]. I've been with [Marlon Hauck] holding for nine months now, and he's done a great job.
"The only thing I really changed was how I kind of approached. I went smoother and let my leg power in the weight room take over from there instead of feeling like I had to kill the ball. That 55-yarder, I knew if I just swing smooth, it'll go there. That's really the only thing I've changed, and it's worked so far."
Records are obviously an extreme challenge to break, and Cosby's record happened to stand for 40 years. Ferrie described how it felt to realize the record was now his.
"Man, it felt really, really good," Ferrie said. "Everyone knows I love this place, and I've always wanted to be here. So, getting my name next to people that I grew up watching and learning about and reading about is truly humbling."
Cosby himself gave kudos to Ferrie on social media. In reply to an article shared on Facebook that'd mentioned Ferrie's record-breaker, Cosby wrote: "That's the way to raise the bar! Congratulations Kyle…Well done!"
Well done, indeed.
Ferrie and the Bulldogs will seek a 2-0 start to the 2025 campaign as they take the field in their home opener at Davis Wade Stadium against No. 12 Arizona State on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
