Husbands Collects MSU’s Third Straight SEC Weekly Honor
September 29, 2025 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Kennedy Husbands was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after scoring her first goal of the season in State's 3-0 win at Missouri on Friday night.
Husbands teed up an impressive volley from 30 yards out for her first goal of the 2025 campaign. It came as Missouri attempted to clear a corner and gave the Bulldogs a two-goal lead. The sophomore defender started her ninth game of the year and was part of a Bulldog back line that allowed just two shots on goal in the team's fifth shutout of the season.
The Midlothian, Texas, native has continued to see a growing role since she cracked the starting lineup midway through her freshman season. Husbands' 68 minutes were her second-highest total in a conference match in her career.
The award marks the third week in a row that a Bulldog has earned a weekly honor from the conference office. Laila Murillo was the SEC Freshman of the Week last week after scoring two goals at Texas, and Ally Perry was the Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15.
State won six SEC weekly honors in four different weeks last season. Husbands was one of those, earning Freshman of the Week recognition on Oct. 31 last fall.
The Bulldogs return home on Thursday night to host Ole Miss in the annual Magnolia Cup rivalry. State has won five straight meetings, the longest winning streak by either school in the history of the rivalry. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at the MSU Soccer Field, and the match will air on SEC Network+.
