Avery Weed Finishes Runner Up At Carmel Cup
August 31, 2025 | Women's Golf
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Mississippi State women's golf squad finished tied for sixth after three rounds at the Carmel Cup. Avery Weed fell just short of her third career collegiate victory at the event, as she finished tied for second.
Weed finished her day in the individual lead at 7-under par after firing a 3-under 69 in the final day of action, which was the third-best round of any Golfer throughout the tournament. She was ultimately knocked out of contention by Texas A&M's Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio, who finished the tournament at 8-under par.
Although she fell short of the victory, Weed's performance was still among the top of all performers throughout the weekend. She picked up her fourth career top five finish after shooting under-par in every round she played in, making her only one of three golfers to do such during the tournament. Weed also carded the first Bulldog eagle of the season on the par-5 sixth hole. She now sits fourth in Bulldog program history with 13 rounds in the 60s and is tied for fifth with 34 par or better rounds.
Samantha Whateley capped out the Carmel Cup with her strongest round of the weekend. She secured a 2-under 70, her first par or better round of the season. The junior from South Africa only needed three birdies to do such, as she had one bogey on her card, the fewest of any Bulldog in the final round. She climbed 15 spots to finish the tournament tied for 27th.
The Bulldogs will return to the course on September 19 at the Mason Rudolph Championship. The tournament will begin on Friday and conclude on Sunday.
