Benito Sanchez Martinez Earns SEC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Honors
March 26, 2025 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Benito Sanchez Martinez was named the SEC Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday after helping lead the Bulldogs to a win over No. 18 South Carolina. This is the first career Player of the Week honor for Sanchez Martinez and the first for a Bulldog this season.
Sanchez Martinez, a native of Potsdam, Germany, has anchored the No. 1 singles position for the Bulldogs since early March. His strong play continued this past weekend as he earned a three-set victory over South Carolina's Casey Hoole (6-3, 4-6, 6-2). The win not only clinched the match for State, but it was also his fourth consecutive win.
In doubles action, the pair of Sanchez Martinez and Petar Jovanovic, who are ranked No. 4 nationally, made quick work of the No. 15 ranked duo of Lucas Andrade Da Silva and Connor Thompson by a score of 6-1. The win marked their 10th victory over a ranked opponent this season and extended their career-best win streak to seven matches.
Sanchez Martinez and No. 17 Mississippi State will be back at home this week for a pair of matches. On Thursday at 3 p.m., they host No. 38 Arkansas, followed by a 1 p.m. contest against No. 29 Florida on Saturday.
Saturday's match at Florida will also be Kids Day. Anyone 12 and under is encouraged to come and enjoy on-court activities starting at 11 a.m., with a post-match meet-and-greet with the team at the conclusion of the match. Registration for Kids Day will begin at 10:30 a.m.
