No. 19 Women’s Golf Set For Old Barnwell Match Play
March 16, 2025 | Women's Golf
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State women's golf squad returns to South Carolina for their second straight tournament in the state for the Old Barnwell Match Play. The tournament is set to begin on Monday, March 16 and will conclude on Tuesday.
The event at Old Barnwell marks the first match play style tournament for State this season. Unlike the traditional style of stroke play, match play will see two teams paired with one another. Each golfer will match up with a golfer from an opponent team and the two will compete head-to-head. Whoever wins the most holes throughout the round earns an individual point for their team, and the first team to win three of the five points will win.
The lineup for the Bulldogs will include Chiara Horder, Izzy Pellot, Ana Pina Ortega, Avery Weed and Samantha Whateley. Surapa Janthamunee will be competing individually in the event.
The last time the Bulldogs participated in a match play tournament was the SEC Tournament last season. The Bulldogs won three matches against Kentucky (3-1-1), LSU (3-1-1) and Texas A&M (3-2) en route to the program's first SEC Championship.
Horder sports the most match play experience for the Bulldogs, competing in 20 rounds of match play between her time at Mississippi State and Texas Tech. Weed has won six of her nine rounds of match play. Pina Ortega will be competing in the first match play tournament of her career.
The Bulldogs will match up with Florida State in the opening round of the Old Barnwell Match Play. Live scoring for the tournament will be available at golfstat.com.
