The Final Horn: State 91, LSU 62
March 12, 2025 | Men's Basketball, Joel Coleman
A quick rundown of MSU’s SEC Tournament win over the Tigers.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Mississippi State used an absolutely dominant first half to lay the foundation for a 91-62 victory over LSU in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament on Wednesday night at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. The Bulldogs built themselves a 20-point lead over the first 20 minutes of action and despite an early second-half surge from LSU, State led by double figures the rest of the evening to advance to a Thursday night matchup against Missouri. MSU rode a 23-5 run into the halftime break to hold a 44-24 edge at the intermission. LSU trimmed State's advantage down to 11 over the first five minutes of the second half, but that's when the Dawgs put together yet another big run – this one a 17-0 one – to take complete control.
KEY NUMBERS: Maybe the most notable figure of the night was 10:04. LSU didn't hit a single field goal over the final 10:04 of the first half, scoring on just five free throws over that span. While the Dawg defense smothered the Tigers, State's lead went from two points to 20. It was also a record-breaking night for MSU. State's 15 team 3-pointers set a new program record for treys in an SEC Tournament game. Josh Hubbard's six makes from long range tied the individual program mark for a single game in the event. The 29-point triumph also marked State's largest-ever SEC Tourney game margin of victory while the 91 points scored were also an MSU SEC Tournament game record.
NEXT UP FOR THE DAWGS: Mississippi State continues play in the SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs will face Missouri on Thursday, March 13. Tip time is set for 6 p.m. CT. The contest will be televised by SEC Network.
