A quick rundown of MSU’s win over Georgia.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Big man Michael Nwoko got Mississippi State off and running, and MSU was able to build on that momentum to get back in the win column with a 76-75 road victory over Georgia at Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday night. Nwoko scored State's first nine points of the contest in just over three minutes of action to lay an early foundation for the triumph. Josh Hubbard's 3-pointer with 10:57 left in the first half gave MSU an 18-17 advantage and the Maroon and White never trailed the rest of the way. It was far from an easy win, however. State was up 40-32 at halftime before Georgia fought back. The score was tied at 71-all with under four minutes to play, but a KeShawn Murphy layup and RJ Melendez dunk down the stretch helped ensure a vital victory for MSU. State is now17-6 overall and 5-5 in Southeastern Conference play this season.
KEY NUMBERS: State shot 53.6 percent as a team, and it was just enough to wrap the game in Maroon and White. MSU's good shooting night from the field helped State overcome a tough evening at the free-throw line. MSU was just 6-for-18 from the charity stripe. Hubbard set the pace individually for State with his 16 points, eclipsing the 1,000-point mark for his career in the process. Murphy had 14 and Riley Kugel added 10 as that duo accounted for 24 of MSU's 32 points from its bench. Nwoko finished with 11.
NEXT UP FOR THE DAWGS: Mississippi State returns home for a battle against Florida. The Bulldogs and Gators square off on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Tip time at the Humphrey Coliseum is set for 6 p.m. CT and the game will be televised by ESPN2.
