Bulldogs drop contest by a score of 31-9.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Mississippi State claimed an early lead but was unable to sustain momentum as they dropped a 31-9 decision at No. 6 Texas A&M on Saturday night.
Kyle Ferrie's first-quarter field goal gave the Bulldogs an advantage before the Aggies claimed a 7-3 lead just prior to halftime. Texas A&M then took control over the final two periods.
State's run game received 119 yards combined from tailbacks Fluff Bothwell and Davon Booth. Defensively, safety Jahron Manning led the Dawgs with 11 tackles while cornerback Kelley Jones added an interception.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring by driving down the field 83 yards ahead of Ferrie's 24-yard field goal at the 4:21 mark of the first quarter. The make put Ferrie in eighth place in MSU history for career points.
A&M looked poised to answer when the Aggies conducted a long drive into the red zone in the second quarter. However, State's defense built a wall and held strong at the 1-yard line, turning the Aggies over on downs at the 8:08 mark.
Texas A&M was able to take its first lead before the intermission. The Aggies scored at the 1:51 mark of the first half with a 34-yard touchdown through the air to go up 7-3.
The third quarter saw a continued defensive fight until A&M extended its lead to 14-3 with 3:30 left in the period. The Aggies then iced the game in the fourth by adding to the scoreboard with a pair of touchdowns and a field goal.
The Bulldogs were able to find paydirt once more in the closing moments. Quarterback Blake Shapen hit receiver Brenen Thompson from 44 yards out with 7:53 left to play. It's the 21st-straight game in which he's played that Shapen has thrown for at least one score – the longest such streak in the nation – but it wasn't enough for the Dawgs.
Next up for MSU…
State has an open week before the Bulldogs travel to face the Florida Gators on Saturday, Oct. 18. Kickoff time is set for an afternoon window with a start time between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. CT. Â A television network has not yet been announced.
