Â
LOS ANGELES, California – Mississippi State's Josh Hubbard is one of 25 players selected to the 2024-25 John R. Wooden Award Top 25 Midseason Watch List announced Tuesday by the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
Â
Chosen by national college basketball experts, the 25 student-athletes are frontrunners for the Wooden Award All-America Team and the Wooden Award Most Outstanding Player.
Â
For this year's award, Hubbard is one of nine SEC players on the Wooden Award Midseason Watch List. He is joined by Johni Broome (Auburn), Walter Clayton Jr. (Florida), Jeremiah Fears (Oklahoma), Tre Johnson (Texas), Chaz Lanier (Tennessee), Mark Sears (Alabama) Wade Taylor IV (Texas A&M) and Zakai Zeigler (Tennessee).
Â
Hubbard is ranked among the SEC's top 10 in five categories: points (17.71 – 9th), assist-to-turnover ratio (4.40 – 1st), three-point field goals made (3.29 – 2nd), three-point field goal percentage (39.0 – 6th) and free throw percentage (86.4 – 8th).
Â
The Madison native is one of four SEC players (Jason Edwards • Vanderbilt; Jeremiah Fears • Oklahoma; Otega Oweh • Kentucky) to pile up double figures and play in every game this season.
Â
Hubbard's 846 points through 49 games is second-most in program history for freshmen and sophomores trailing only Ray White from the 1970s. He has racked up double figures in 44 of 49 outings fueled by 19 efforts of 20+ points. His freshman campaign of 598 points was tops for a State freshmen and 8th overall for a single-season.
Â
Hubbard has dialed up 21.2 points per game sparked by 84 triples over his last 22 outings. He has led the team in scoring during 19 of his 30 career starts since the Auburn game on 01/28/2024.
Â
Hubbard's SEC top scoring efforts are 34 points versus No. 16 Kentucky (02/27/2024), 32 points at LSU (02/24/2024) and 28 points versus No. 17 South Carolina (03/09/2024). He fired in 20 of his 23 points after halftime versus Utah (11/17/2024) and amassed a season-high 26 points fueled by six three-pointers against West Georgia (11/04/2024) during the 2024-25 season opener.
Â
Hubbard has sunk multiple triples in 42 of 49 career games and has hit at least one three-pointer in 27 consecutive games which is the third-longest streak in State history. In total, he has already buried 154 treys which is already 14th on the program's all-time list.
Â
Hubbard, an ESPN top 100 recruit for the Class of 2023, capped his high school career as the state of Mississippi's all-time leading scorer with 4,367 career points. He broke a state record that stood for 37 years previously held by Mississippi State's Robert Woodard.
Â
As the 2024-25 college basketball season progresses, the Wooden Award will feature a late season watch list and the national ballot.
Â
The national ballot will consist of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank those players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games.
Â
The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced during the week of the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight.
Â
The winners and the All Americans of the 2025 John R. Wooden Award, presented by Principal,
will be honored at the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Friday, April 11, 2025.
Â
Hubbard and the Dawgs return to the action at Vanderbilt on Tuesday evening. Tip time is slated at 8 p.m. CT and will be televised by ESPNU in addition to being streamed on the Watch ESPN app.
