Bulldog Duo Lands NWSL Preseason Camp Invites
January 22, 2025 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Maddy Anderson and Hannah Johnson will participate in NWSL training camps this spring as non-roster invitees. Anderson was invited to Racing Louisville FC's squad, and Johnson will join fellow Bulldog midfielder Macey Hodge with Angel City FC.
Â
Anderson, the SEC Goalkeeper of the Year, led the conference and ranked eighth nationally in goals against average (0.47). She also led the league in save percentage (84.6 percent) and shutouts (14). Her 14 shutouts were the second-most in SEC single-season history and second nationally this year. She logged 39 career shutouts, which was an MSU school record, ranked second in SEC history and was second among active players nationally in 2024.
Â
The Seabrook, Texas, native led State to the lowest goals allowed total in program history in back-to-back years, commanding a defense that faltered just 16 times in 2023 and was even stingier in 2024, allowing 10 goals.
Â
Johnson led the Bulldog offense with nine assists in 2024, which ranked third in the SEC and among the top 30 nationally. It was a career year for the Middleburg, Florida, native as she recorded a career-best 15 points and scored three times. She scored and assisted in the same game twice this year, and had a hand in the game-winning goal in both of those matches against Missouri and Tennessee.
Â
The pair of invites gives Mississippi State five members of its 2024 SEC Championship team that are active in professional soccer. Along with Hodge, Anderson and Johnson in the NWSL, Rylie Combs and Aitana Martinez-Montoya signed professional contracts overseas in Sweden and Portugal, respectively. Additional State alumni are active in professional soccer in Germany and Hungary.
Â
NWSL roster requirements state that teams may carry a maximum of 26 players and at least three must be goalkeepers. Angel City's announced squad is currently made up of 28 players, five of whom are non-roster invitees. Racing Louisville's team includes 28 contracted players along with six non-roster invitees.
Â
Angel City will play preseason matches against Portland Thorns FC on Feb. 16 and Seattle Reign FC on Feb. 22. Racing Louisville is one of a number of NWSL teams that will camp in Bradenton, Florida, and play scrimmages against each other. Racing Louisville opens the 2025 season on March 15 at home against the North Carolina Courage, and Angel City begins the following day at home against the San Diego Wave.
